Only three percent of students have the kind of transformative experience in college that fosters personal success and happiness, according to a 2014 study by Gallup and Purdue University.

Whether you live on campus or off, are part-time or full-time, the culture really matters. So before selecting a school, you need to carefully consider what is important to you. 

It’s not only a matter of finding a school with the right academic program—you want to choose the school with an atmosphere that will best usher you into this next exciting phase of life. 

If faith is important to you, a Christian campus is more likely to offer opportunities to explore and deepen your spiritual life than a secular university. More than 70 percent of Christians leave their faith in college, according to multiple sources and surveys. In addition, more than one-third of young adults are now disaffiliated with religion, according to the Pew Research Center. These stats illustrate the weight of choosing a culture to nurture faith instead of deconstruct it.

Christian universities are designed with guidelines to help you navigate the transition from home to university life. At secular universities, it’s up to the student to put boundaries in place, which brings me to campus safety. 

Campus visits can also help you have that feeling of safety at the university. In fact, the best way to learn about the culture of any college is to spend some time there and take a guided tour. 

Spend time visiting with admissions counselors, touring facilities, eating meals, meeting students and faculty, visiting classes, and of course, attending those incredible sporting events. 

An on-campus visit will probably solidify your top choice for the college you want to attend. This is a wonderful moment so enjoy every second. 

Overall, don’t discount the value of the culture you will find yourself in on a daily basis. The better you know yourself and what will fulfill you, the more likely you will make a superb choice.
